Survey Reveals Native American Children Have More Tooth Decay

In a statement released on May 30, 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics announced that children born to indigenous populations have more tooth decay and cavities compared to other children. The pediatrician group further recommended that doctors and dentists should pay more attention to these kids’ oral health.

A survey conducted in the US, Alaska and Canada revealed that 68 percent of children aged 2 to 5 have untreated cavities. Furthermore, it was also found that 90 percent of the children in Canadian indigenous communities have tooth decay.

Dr. James Irvine, coauthor of the pediatrician group’s statement, found “remarkable similarities in health issues and living circumstances of indigenous children in the US and Canada.” His coauthor, Dr. Steve Holve, also emphasized the nature of childhood tooth decay as an infectious disease.

With the outbreak of tooth decay and cavities among kids in US and Canadian indigenous communities, the pediatrician group encourages its members to assume larger roles in tooth decay prevention and recommends the following:

  1. Parents, guardians and caregivers should be adequately educated on proper dental hygiene and sensible diet so that they know what to do with regard to their minor wards.
  2. Prenatal screening for dental health and other dental care services should be made available to pregnant women.
  3. Oral care programs and dental treatment services should be afforded to children. Topical fluoride varnishes, in particular, is what Dr. Holve hopes to become the focus in the treatment of tooth decay in children.

Eating Right to Prevent Tooth Decay

Brushing and flossing are ideally the best steps to protect your kid’s teeth from decay as well as gum disease. But without a well-balanced and healthy diet, brushing and flossing won’t do much.

Dr. Courtney Chinn, DDS, MPH, of the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, stresses the importance of sensible food choices. “What parents allow their children to eat and drink seriously affects their overall health, including their teeth and gums.” Accordingly, vitamins and minerals are essential to keeping your child’s teeth (and gums) strong and healthy. A tip for pregnant women: It would be best to get your baby off to a good start. Eat sensibly during pregnancy.

To fight off cavities, make sure that fluoride is a part of your child’s diet. Fluoride is available in toothpaste and mouthwash products. However, avoid excessive fluoride consumption since it could blotch the teeth.

Be particular on foods rich in calcium and vitamin D. Low-fat dairy products, green leafy vegetables and sardines are among the good sources of calcium. Vitamin D, on the other hand, can be found in fortified soy and rice beverages and milk.

In addition to calcium and vitamin D, let your kids indulge in foods rich in beta carotene and vitamin A like oranges and carrots. Meat, fish and eggs are also good sources of phosphorus, which helps in the formation of your child’s tooth enamel. Magnesium is equally needed, which can be found in bananas, spinach and whole grains.

Low-fluoride toothpaste is no better than nonfluoride toothpaste in preventing tooth decay among children

Toothpastes containing less than 1,000 parts per million of fluoride concentrations are as ineffective at preventing tooth decay as those with no fluoride. This finding, published in the Cochrane Database of research group Cochrane Collaboration, is taken from 79 clinical studies involving 73,000 children worldwide.

Children’s toothpastes range from 100 ppm to 1,400 ppm fluoride concentration. “Toothpastes with lower fluoride levels, in the 440 to 550 range, give results that are no better than the results seen with toothpaste that does not contain fluoride,” said co-authors Helen Worthington and Anne-Marie Glenny of the Cochrane Oral Health Group, School of Dentistry, University of Manchester.

The researchers sought to establish the link between the use of topical fluorides (toothpastes) and the risk of dental fluorosis in young children. Dental fluorosis refers to changes in the appearance of tooth enamel caused by long-term ingestion of fluoride while the teeth are forming. It can range from mild white patches on the teeth to severe mottling with brown staining.

The results suggest that brushing a child’s teeth with a fluoride toothpaste before the age of 12 months can increase the risk of the child developing mild fluorosis. And although 1,000 parts per million of fluoride is effective in fighting tooth decay, there is strong evidence that such levels may still cause fluorosis in children up to 6 years of age whose permanent teeth are still developing.

The authors, however, pointed out that for some children considered to be at a high risk of tooth decay by their dentist, the benefit to health of preventing decay may outweigh the risk of fluorosis. In such cases, careful brushing of children’s teeth with a small amount of toothpaste containing higher levels of fluoride would be beneficial.

“The risk of tooth decay and its consequences, such as pain and extractions, is greater than the small risk of fluorosis. Children would have to swallow a lot of toothpaste over a long period of time to get the severe brown mottling on the teeth,” Dr. Glenny added.
